How to Eliminate Costly Chargebacks in iGaming

The iGaming industry has shown immense growth over time. Growth also suggests more players making deposits and wagering. This also means more chargebacks in iGaming. Total global chargeback transactions are projected to hit 337 million, representing a surge of 42% from the 2023 levels.

This is because players don’t like losing. Since gambling is all about winning or losing money, it becomes more prone to payment disputes. When disputes from the player’s side tend to increase, it becomes a problem for the iGaming platform

It is the costly chargebacks that are the root cause of these problems because they cause huge amounts of losses. Before understanding how to eliminate costly chargebacks, it is important to understand what chargebacks are in the first place.

What Are Chargebacks in iGaming?

Chargebacks are the forced refunds that a player initiates, not from the online casinos but from the bank. While the players should ideally get their refunds from the iGaming platforms themselves, chargeback refunds are not fair and are, in fact, a form of malpractice on the players’ part.

Two major reasons why this happens are –

  • A player deposits a certain amount of money and loses it all. The disappointment of the loss makes them turn to their bank, where they falsely claim that the money charged to them was unauthorized.
  • It is also a common kind of gambling fraud where imposters either hack player accounts or steal their account details. Through this information, they deposit funds, gamble, and even withdraw winnings while the actual victim player is oblivious to the fact.

How Does This affect the iGaming platforms?

The impact of frequent chargebacks in iGaming is more than losing the disputed amount.

When a chargeback is raised, operators lose the wagered funds, but they are also charged with additional processing fees by the iGaming payment provider.

Chargebacks in bulk beyond a certain amount can lead to penalties by the payment processors or even the termination of the merchant’s account. This can cause disruption in the payment infrastructure of the platform. This costs the platform a lot.

This will further increase the risk score of the operators, which ultimately makes it hard and even expensive to process even those transactions that are legitimate. Furthermore, the reputation damage that comes after that is even more costly and is tough to recover from.

Since chargebacks directly affect the platform financially, it is necessary to at least minimize the costly chargebacks that could cause higher losses. Let us now understand how to do the same.

How to Eliminate Costly Chargebacks in iGaming?

Now that the problem has been identified, let us now understand the actions that iGaming operators can take about this.

Strengthen Player Verification

Firstly, it is necessary to ensure that the person making the wager is who they claim to be and is not performing identity theft.

  • KYC acts as a foundational tool here and becomes an additional layer of protection. A KYC makes it comparatively harder for anyone to use stolen card details to make a deposit. Adopting this practice alone helps identify fraudulent accounts and activities. Once the operator knows who their players are, they can easily challenge any form of false claims
  • 3D cyber security authentication is another way to protect your platform from fraudsters. It is like an add-on verification step that can be added to the payment section.
  • Operators must also ensure that all the payment information on file, such as card details, wallet accounts, and payout methods, match the verified player profile. It must be noted that inconsistencies are also early indicators of fraud

Monitor Player Behaviour Continuously

Not all fraudulent activities are visible to the front. Hence, they do not get caught easily. Observation of patterns becomes necessary in such scenarios.

Operators need to take notice of unusual and fishy betting behaviour. This is behaviour that is large, rapid and erratic, and falls outside of the typical player behaviour. If such patterns are observed, then it means that the account may have been compromised.

In a similar manner, multiple login attempts from the same IP addresses or even the presence of duplicate accounts are evident red flags that require immediate attention and must be acted upon.

AI-driven fraud detection tools and monitoring of transactions in real time help operators catch these patterns before it gets too late.

The purpose is to intervene early, and not after the chargebacks in iGaming have been raised.

Clear Communication With the Players

Not all chargebacks are fraudulent, some may also be genuine and are derived from player confusion.

  • One of the most common triggers for this is billing descriptors that are unrecognizable. This means that if the name that appears on a player’s bank statement does not match the platform they remember depositing on, they may dispute the charge just because they do not recognize it. Hence, using a clear and consistent billing name across all transactions eliminates this problem.
  • Send confirmation messages immediately after a deposit or withdrawal is initiated. When players are provided with immediate proof of their transaction reduces the scope of it being questioned later.
  • Operators should also publish a transparent and accessible refund policy. When players know what the process looks like, many disputes get resolved through customer support itself before they even reach the chargeback stage.

Set Transaction Limits

Place caps on deposits. It is an underutilized yet effective tool. If the players cannot make a high amount of deposits, the chargebacks in iGaming won’t be as high as they were earlier.

Transaction limits also add a limit on what can go wrong in any single incident and make high-risk behaviour easier to detect and flag as it happens.

Respond Swiftly in Case of Disputes

If a player is facing issues, speed matters. A responsive 24/7 support team that can –

  • Clarify transaction details
  • Explain platform policies
  • Process a direct refund quickly

can stop a complaint from becoming a chargeback.

In many cases, issuing a refund directly to the player is cheaper and less damaging than absorbing the chargeback fee and the associated processing penalties.

Final Thoughts

Chargebacks in iGaming are a persistent challenge, but they are not inevitable. The operators who put the right prevention measures in place from the beginning are the ones who can actually avoid them.

Stronger identity verification, continuous behavioural monitoring, clear communication, and fast support together form a framework that significantly reduces both the frequency and the cost of chargebacks. The investment in these measures is far smaller than the losses they prevent.
